Every year in the United States, at least 8,000 motor vehicle accidents are due to faulty tire failures, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Some of these tire failures are caused by driver error, and some are caused by faults in the design or manufacturing of the tires. Tire manufacturers often know about these faults often elect to deal with the costs of lawsuits rather than update their manufacturing processes. If you suffered injury in an accident because of faulty tires, learn more about your legal rights by contacting us today. Many Types of Tire Fault Accidents, injuries, and deaths are frequently due to the following tire faults and failures:
Tread Separation One of the most common examples of faulty tires is tread separation, which occurs when the treads or plies of a tire separate from one another. A ply is a layer of rubber-coated wire or fabric that makes up the tire casing. Steel-belted radial tires present a risk of tread separation because steel belts don't stick to the rubber used in the tire unless the manufacturer uses a special technology — and many tire manufacturers don't use this technology. When tire treads on a moving vehicle separate, a tire blowout is the likely result, making it difficult to maintain control of the vehicle. Tread separation is a particularly dangerous problem with sport utility vehicles (SUVs), in part because of their higher center of gravity. In 2000, a Bridgestone/Firestone faulty tire recall was issued for Ford Motor Company SUVs. Thousands of injuries and deaths were associated with this instance of tire separation fault. Reasons for Tire Separation Tread separation can be due to the way the tire was manufactured or maintained — for example:
Debeading Debeading occurs when faulty tires separate wholly or partially off of their rims, at the level of the tire beads. This results in an immediate loss of tire pressure, which contributes to the chances of the vehicle rolling over. Tire Bead Failure Bead failures, or bead fractures, occur during inflation of a tire. They can result in a low-pressure explosion, causing tire parts to be thrown off with great force. Multi-Piece Rims and Wheels Multi-piece rims are so dangerous that repair shops are required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to provide a safety cage for an employee to use while putting a tire with a multi-piece rim on a vehicle, due to the risk of an explosion. OSHA tried to get multi-piece rims banned, but the tire and wheel manufacturing industries have fought to keep them on the market. Oversized Tires Some manufacturers of SUVs have used oversized tires to maximize the rugged look of their vehicles, but oversized tires can be unsafe because they raise the vehicle's center of gravity and lower the friction side forces on the tire, making a rollover more likely. Defects During Tire Mounting and Inflation In addition to multi-piece rim and wheel explosions, faulty tire defects that often manifest during mounting or inflation are "zipper failures," when the sidewall of the tire bursts (the rupture often resembles a zipper), and tire bead failures.
